Project Summary
"Flowers for Mum" shouldn't lead to birthday balloons for Greg.
The most popular part of the user journey — finding the perfect card — was being derailed by a clumsy search experience.
The dedicated developers worked in partnership with the data analyst on making a superb algorithm. I got to work on the usability & overarching customer experience from mobile to web.

Classic
searching should lead to finding
Moonpig customers struggled to find what they were looking for using the search bar across mobile & web.
The legacy search functionality didn’t match present expectations of a search bar interaction & functionality.
We can all thank Google’s search bar for making expectations useful, super fast & predictive.
How might we improve the overall search experience so that customers can find the product they want effortlessly, consistently & with strong relevancy to the keyword provided

The Tension
Customers were spelling "Valentines" wrong and getting "We're Sorry for your Loss" cards. Obviously not ideal.
—
Users were spelling search terms wrong
We all type with thumbs now
—
No logic was applied to misfires or near matches
—
The mobile experience was especially unforgiving
—
Top searches weren’t helping guide intent
—
No recent search memory — every time felt like starting over

Common pain points
—
Poor synonym and keyword coverage
—
Ignoring misspellings completely
—
Zero product counts next to categories
—
No memory of previous searches
—
Inconsistent search behavior between platforms
—
No 'Clear All' search functionality

opportunity gaps
—
Implement fuzzy logic for search misspellings
—
Show live product counts with suggestions
—
Create continuity between devices and sessions
—
Suggest trending terms and relevant seasonal prompts
—
Deliver the right destination page every time

Resolution
We yanked out the weeds & encouraged the search bar to have some manners.
On mobile, web, and app, we introduced —
—
Smart, forgiving search that handled spelling slip ups like a charm
—
A logic-first design that actually understood what users meant
—
Top search suggestions with real-time product counts — because numbers matter
—
Seamless redirect to the right page, not a dead end
—
Clean memory of recent searches, keeping customers in the loop
All polished with a smooth UI that felt natural, invisible and right where it needed to be.
Moonpig’s new search didn’t just work — it worked like magic.
